Sensory Solutions for Sensational Kids

A young boy stands proudly at the top of a ramp with a spaceship scooter board beside him. He is wearing goggles and has green armbands. His right arm is extended, fist clenched, and chin up in a superhero pose

I believe that our deepest desire is to be fully known and loved. I've seen so many families bewildered by the behavior of their children who acted, at least in part, out of sensory needs. These needs aren't obvious. Most of us manage sensory input more or less automatically. We shift our weight in our chair without losing focus on a speaker's topic. We walk and talk without falling down or losing our train of thought (well, usually). I help define the "Why?’’ of these reactions so that parents can become wiser. In my clinic I create an environment that provides the “just-right” challenge so that the child is able to respond in a more mature, complex, or regulated way. And I problem solve with both the parent, child and others in the household to improve family life.

Also important to who I am as a therapist is who I am as a parent to children (now grown) who have their own sensory challenges. I know how fragmented it can seem when you are working with medical or mental health professionals, educators, and other community providers in your child's life. I will facilitate communication and coordination to ensure a cohesive approach to your family’s needs. As I offer a value-added service, meaning I don't fit the limiting requirements of third-party payors, I am not in network with any insurance. I will be happy to generate superbills which you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. I am happy to work with a therapist who is in your insurance plan and transition in a coordinated way when long-term therapy is desired.

From my early days as an OT my work has been informed by the theory and legacy of Dr. A. Jean Ayres. I aspire to emulate her approach to helping clients of any age thrive by focusing on sensory integration and a relational, playful approach. I have a small sensory gym in which I engineer an environment for each client that is meant to engage and challenge them. My clients learn about themselves, develop their own strategies for coping, and find their sensory superpowers. They (and their caregivers) leave with the tools to become better students, problem solvers, adventuresome eaters, and self-advocates.
